Time Out!

Public holiday, bank holiday, giorno festivo; call it what you will, days off and long weekends such as the Easter break coming up this month can be a beacon on a worker's annual calendar. Italy has twelve official national holidays over the course of a year and in addition, each region celebrates its own regional holidays plus local Saints' days.

Breaks and bridges

In some countries (notably the UK), public holidays that fall on a weekend are officially replaced by a day off the following Monday, but this is not always the case in Italy.

In Italy, when a public holiday falls on a Tuesday or Thursday, the odds are high that many smaller and family-run businesses will close on the Monday or Friday in a tradition called "making the bridge" (fare il ponte), where the holidays are bridged by taking a day off to turn the period into a four-day break.

  • Find out about all the holidays this year with the Public Holidays in Italy INFOrmation Page which details national and local days off
  • And find out, too, how the School Holidays might affect your plans over the next few months

And if you want to make the most of the coming break, find out about special events in the region by browsing the What's On Guide.
